Rochester and the Region

The University of Rochester is located on the Genesee River about two miles from the center of Rochester, and about 10 miles south of Lake Ontario. The City of Rochester and its suburbs, a community of about 750,000 people, is rich in amenities and cultural resources.

The city has its own orchestra, the Rochester Philharmonic, and numerous musical events, (many free), are available through the University's world-famous Eastman School of Music. Rochester possesses a number of established commercial and non-commercial theater groups, a variety of museums, the University's Memorial Art Gallery, and theGeorge Eastman House George Eastman House, the home of one of the world's major film and print collections.

Rochester is home for professional sports teams in Triple A baseball, A-league soccer, AHL hockey, indoor and outdoor lacrosse, and arena2 football.

Greater Rochester has many fine restaurants and casual dining establishments that serve all types of cuisine. The Finger Lakes Region, only 30 minutes drive to the south, and the Adirondack Region three hours to the east, provide many opportunities for outdoor recreation.
